Mercedes Intensifies Efforts to Enhance Race Starts

According to George Russell, the Mercedes team is diligently working to improve their race starts, a crucial aspect they aim to perfect before the Formula 1 season resumes in Miami. Despite achieving four front-row lockouts in the initial three Grands Prix and Sprint, neither Russell nor his teammate has managed to secure the lead after the first lap. The team's primary weakness lies in their starts, but they have demonstrated sufficient pace to recover and win the first three races. Ferrari has shown exceptional starting prowess this season, thanks to their compact turbo, which enables quicker spin-up times and facilitates finding the ideal launch window. Drivers have limited opportunities to practice starts, restricted to the end of free practice sessions during Grand Prix weekends. Russell emphasized that while direct practice is scarce, the team is heavily focused on analyzing data to address their significant flaw. Speaking during Pirelli tire testing in Germany, Russell highlighted the extensive work being done behind the scenes, including simulator analysis and looking ahead to upcoming races. The team is gearing up for two sprint races upon their return, starting with Miami and Montreal. Although they are not permitted to practice starts during tire testing, they are leveraging this period to work on their strategy, driven by data analysis. Formula 1 is set to return on May 1-3 with the Miami Grand Prix, the season's second Sprint weekend, airing live on Sky Sports F1.
