The Significance of World Football Giving Day
On May 26, the global football community will unite for the inaugural World Football Giving Day, a landmark event that aims to bring people together to give back. This initiative has garnered the support of over 100 organisations worldwide, including prominent figures such as Jurgen Klopp, Juan Mata, and Vivianne Miedema, as well as partners like adidas and Right to Dream. In a time of growing global division, World Football Giving Day seeks to harness the power of football to bridge gaps and foster unity, especially on the eve of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The event is powered by Common Goal, an initiative launched by Mata in 2017, where football personalities pledge to donate 1% of their salaries, resulting in millions being raised for projects globally. Common Goal's CEO, Mary Connor, envisions a future where everyone can contribute to this cause. "Football can either reflect the world or shape it," Connor remarks. "At Common Goal, we opt for the latter, utilising the sport to drive positive outcomes, particularly for young people and communities." Connor, a former professional athlete and co-founder of Soccer Without Borders, understands the game's potential to unite people. She recounts her experience in Vietnam, where a simple act of buying a football and playing with locals helped break down cultural barriers. World Football Giving Day is designed to be an annual event, building upon the UN's World Football Day. The goal is to create a tradition that grows year by year, mobilising resources to areas of need and promoting unity. To participate, individuals can visit the World Football Giving Day website to donate to registered non-profits or find their own way to give back locally or globally.
