Glasgow's Champions Cup Hopes Dashed by Toulon in Quarter-Final

Glasgow Warriors' bid to reach their first Investec Champions Cup semi-final was thwarted by a 22-19 defeat to RC Toulon at Scotstoun. Despite being favorites due to their strong home form and Toulon's domestic struggles, Franco Smith's side fell short. The three-time European champions Toulon secured a last-four clash against Leinster or Sale with a hard-fought victory. Glasgow suffered a late setback when Max Williamson was ruled out, replaced by Macenzzie Duncan on the bench. The home side took the lead after a cautious start, with Alex Samuel and Ben Afshar combining to send Stafford McDowall over for the first try. Toulon responded quickly, with Jeremy Sinzelle and Gael Drean breaching the Glasgow defense. A trademark Kyle Steyn run put Glasgow back in Toulon territory, but Sione Tuipulotu was held up just short of the line. Toulon's ill-discipline was punished when Junior Kpoku was yellow-carded, and Glasgow capitalized with Ollie Smith darting down the line to score. The hosts found themselves on the back foot, and Jean-Baptiste Gros crept over for a converted try to level the score at 12-12. Toulon took the lead with Melvyn Jaminet passing to Drean for his second try. Glasgow regained the lead in the second half with Gregor Hiddleston stretching for the line, but Toulon broke through with Nacho Brex powering to the line. Warriors' late surge was thwarted as Toulon forced a turnover to seal the win. Meanwhile, Leinster Rugby trounced Sale Sharks 43-13 to book their place in the semi-finals, where they will face Toulon. Leinster got off to a perfect start with Dan Sheehan crashing over, and they went on to score six tries, with Harry Byrne adding conversions. Sale reduced the deficit with a George Ford penalty, but they were down to 14 men when Dan du Preez was yellow-carded. Leinster stretched their lead with tries from Hugo Keenan, Ryan Baird, Rieko Ioane, and Tommy O'Brien, with Byrne adding conversions. Sale's Alex Willis touched down, but a Byrne penalty and a converted Jamie Osborne try wrapped up a convincing win for Leinster.
