Kent faces uphill task against Northants as Crawley's struggles continue

Kent's Zak Crawley scored his third consecutive sub-30 County Championship score, while Northamptonshire set a record 684 for two declared at Canterbury. Ricardo Vasconcelos, Luke Procter, and Calvin Harrison all scored hundreds on the opening day, and Nathan McSweeney achieved the same feat on Saturday, marking the first time Northants' top four have all made centuries. Procter remained unbeaten on 261, posting a maiden double ton. Kent then lost Ben Compton and Sam Northeast cheaply, with all eyes on Crawley, whose Test spot is under scrutiny following a disappointing Ashes series and an average of just over 31 in 64 matches. Crawley showed some patience to reach 26 but was eventually dismissed, getting his off-stump knocked back, as Kent closed on 119 for six. Elsewhere, Ben Duckett was run out for one, while Joe Clarke's 136 helped Nottinghamshire take a commanding 450-run lead over Glamorgan. Ben McKinney boosted his prospects of displacing Crawley or Duckett with a 244 in Durham's 605 for five declared against Gloucestershire. Craig Overton's career-best 141 lifted Somerset to 348 in response to Essex's 149, and Rishi Patel's unbeaten 133 helped Leicestershire fight back against Surrey.
