In a significant coaching shake-up, John Cartwright has stepped down as Hull FC's head coach with immediate effect, clearing the path for Steve McNamara to assume the role from 2027. Although Cartwright will remain employed by Hull FC, he has relinquished his coaching duties.
Assistant coach Andy Last will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue in his capacity as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign. A highly respected figure in the sport, McNamara is set to return to his boyhood club, where he began his junior career before going on to make over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996. His playing career also included international representation with England and Great Britain.
As a coach, McNamara has amassed an impressive resume, having worked with Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, the England international side, and holding assistant coaching positions with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors in the NRL. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to its most successful period, highlighted by a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield win, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC's chief executive, Richie Myler, expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, praising him as a 'coach of the highest calibre' who truly understands the club and the city.
Andrew Thirkill, Hull FC's chairman, also welcomed McNamara's appointment, citing his experience, leadership, and high standards as crucial in building a competitive team. Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live this season, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches each week on Sky Sports+.
