Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 caps for England between 2012 and 2022, Launchbury has had a storied career, claiming three Six Nations championships and participating in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Since joining Quins in 2023, following a stint with Toyota Verblitz in Japan, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his involvement has been limited to just six games this term.
In a statement on Harlequins' website, Launchbury expressed his gratitude, saying, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He reflected on his career, "I've been fortunate to represent the teams I have, and to have worn the England shirt 70 times is an honor." Launchbury also thanked his teammates, past and present, for the friendships and memories they've shared. Acknowledging the toll rugby has taken on his body, Launchbury stated, "I have given my all to my career and my body is telling me it needs a break." While he hopes to remain involved in the sport, Launchbury is looking forward to spending more time with his family and watching his children grow up.
