Hull FC Announces Coaching Change: Cartwright Departs, McNamara to Take Over in 2027

John Cartwright has relinquished his position as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately. Steve McNamara is slated to assume the role starting from the 2027 Betfred Super League season. Although Cartwright is no longer at the helm, he remains an employee of Hull FC. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will take the reins as head coach for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign. Notably, McNamara will be returning to his boyhood club, where he began his playing career and made over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996. He also had a distinguished international career, representing England and Great Britain. As a coach, McNamara has had a successful career spanning two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England national team, as well as in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to unprecedented success, including a Challenge Cup final win, a League Leaders Shield, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, citing his exceptional coaching caliber and deep understanding of the club and city. Andrew Thirkill, Hull FC chairman, also welcomed McNamara's appointment, emphasizing his experience, leadership, and high standards as crucial in building a competitive team. Sky Sports will continue to broadcast every Super League game live, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches on Sky Sports+.
