John Cartwright has stepped down as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, paving the way for Steve McNamara to take the reins in 2027. McNamara, who will return to his boyhood club, has agreed to join Hull FC as head coach for the 2027 Betfred Super League season. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the role of head coach for the remainder of the current season. McNamara, a highly respected figure in the game, boasts an impressive coaching career spanning over two decades, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side.
During his time at Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to unprecedented success, including a Challenge Cup final victory and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his delight at securing McNamara's services, stating that he is a "coach of the highest calibre" who truly understands the club and the city. Chairman Andrew Thirkill also welcomed McNamara's appointment, citing his experience, leadership, and high standards as critical factors in building a competitive team.
McNamara will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the remainder of the 2026 campaign before joining Hull FC in 2027.
