Wrexham Boosts Play-off Chances with Convincing Win Over Stoke

Wrexham has reignited its bid for a Sky Bet Championship play-off spot with a decisive 2-0 victory over Stoke at home. The outcome of Hull's draw with Birmingham means Wrexham has narrowed the gap to sixth place to just two points, with three matches remaining. The home team's anxiety following consecutive losses to Southampton and Birmingham was alleviated by first-half goals from George Thomason and Josh Windass, scored just 69 seconds apart. For Stoke, this marked their sixth consecutive away defeat, dropping them to 17th place. Following back-to-back defeats for the first time since the start of the season, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson made four changes to the lineup, including a notable switch in goal. Wales international Danny Ward, who had not played since dislocating his elbow in late August, was given the nod to start over Arthur Okonkwo. Wrexham began the match with urgency, as if their season hung in the balance, with an early call for a penalty after Sam Smith was pushed by Bosun Lawal. However, the referee was uninterested, and the contact may have occurred outside the box anyway. The breakthrough came when Lawal failed to clear George Dobson's free-kick, and Ollie Rathbone's effort was cleared off the line by Ben Pearson. Thomason's resulting corner in the 31st minute flew directly over Gavin Bazunu's head into the far corner of the net, with Windass attempting to assist it over the line. Windass scored again just over a minute later, capitalizing on Aaron Cresswell's mistake to slot past Bazunu for his 13th league goal of the season. After the break, Stoke showed some ambition, with Dan Scarr blocking Bae Jun-ho's goalbound effort, but Wrexham almost scored a third when Thomason charged down the left and crossed. Jesurun Rak-Sakyi's panicked clearance struck Smith and flew to safety when it could have easily embarrassed the defender. Smith headed over after Thomason and Windass combined and Bazunu failed to collect. Stoke came close to reducing the deficit in the closing moments when Lamine Cisse struck the crossbar from close range, and their final hopes disappeared when Million Manhoef drove wide. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson stated, 'The aim has been to take this to the wire, and that's what we spoke to the lads about. Let's not hand the play-off place to the other teams.' Parkinson expressed his satisfaction with the result and acknowledged the bonus of Hull's draw with Birmingham, which has given Wrexham a renewed chance at the play-offs. Stoke manager Michael O'Neill expressed his disappointment, stating, 'There wasn't a great deal in it until two ridiculous moments. There are a lot of things that need sorting out.'
