Despite speculation surrounding the financial future of LIV Golf, star player Jon Rahm claims he is not overly concerned about the breakaway league's prospects. Rumors have been circulating that LIV could lose its funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which has been backing the format. However, Rahm insists he is focused on competing and is not worried about the league's future. LIV Golf's latest event, LIV Mexico, began on Thursday, with Rahm shooting a round of 65 to place second.
In a statement, Rahm said he wasn't too worried about the rumors, stating that he wouldn't waste time thinking about it until the people in charge confirmed their validity. The Daily Telegraph reported that LIV Golf executives had been summoned to an emergency meeting in New York, while the Financial Times stated that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund was considering cutting its support for the project.
LIV Golf launched in 2022, paying roughly $1 billion in signing bonuses to some of the PGA Tour's biggest names. The league has raised its prize money to $30 million this year, with CEO Scott O'Neil expressing confidence in the business's trajectory.
O'Neil emphasized that LIV Golf is in a good position, having secured sponsorship deals with big brands like Rolex and HSBC. He also hinted at potential changes in the league's operation, including a possible blend of LIV and national opens. Sky Sports News chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol believes that Saudi Arabia is reevaluating its investment in sports, seeking a return on their investment. Solhekol thinks that Saudi Arabia will continue to back sports like football, Formula 1, and golf, but with a more business-oriented approach.
