Historic Appointment: Marie-Louise Eta Becomes First Female Head Coach in Top Five European Leagues

Marie-Louise Eta has broken new ground by becoming the first female head coach in the top five European men's leagues, taking the reins at Union Berlin. Initially set to coach the women's team next season, Eta has agreed to an interim role to guide the men's team through their final five games. Her appointment follows her trailblazing work as the first woman to serve as an assistant coach in the Bundesliga and the top divisions of Europe's major leagues in 2023. Union Berlin's sporting director, Horst Heldt, expressed his delight at Eta's agreement, stating, 'I'm delighted that Marie Louise Eta has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis before she becomes head coach of the women's first team as planned in the summer.' Eta acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, 'Given the points gap in the lower half of the table, our place in the Bundesliga is not yet secure. I am delighted the club has entrusted me with this challenging task.' Her appointment comes after the departure of Steffen Baumgart, who was let go along with his assistants Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna following a 3-1 loss to Heidenheim. England manager Sarina Wiegman praised Eta's appointment, calling her a 'trailblazer' and stating that it was a matter of time before a woman took on such a role. The move marks a significant step forward for women in football, with Eta joining the likes of Sabrina Wittmann, who became the first woman to coach a men's team in Germany's top three divisions in 2024. Wittmann reflected on her own experience, saying, 'I knew I opened the door a little for women... I was honestly afraid of closing the door.' Her success at Ingolstadt, where she remains head coach after signing a contract extension, has paved the way for Eta and other women to follow in her footsteps.
