The goal is to bring people together to participate and donate, especially at a time of growing global division and ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This initiative is powered by Common Goal, a movement launched by Mata in 2017 where football figures pledge to donate one percent of their salaries, with over 500 participants raising millions for projects worldwide. Common Goal's CEO, Mary Connor, aims to involve everyone in this effort, emphasizing that football can either reflect the world or shape it for positive outcomes, particularly for young people and communities. With a reduction in aid and unstable funding for non-profits, Connor believes it's crucial for everyone who loves the game to take action, not just the players. The story of Connor's experience in Vietnam, where a simple game of football brought a whole town together, illustrates the power of the game to challenge assumptions and connect people. Similarly, in Nicaragua, organizing girls' football has been used to address teen pregnancy rates and promote gender equality.
