Cyclist Faces Suspension for On-Road Altercation

The governing body of world cycling has imposed a 25-day ban on New Zealand cyclist Kiaan Watts following an incident where he struck a fellow competitor during a recent event. Footage captured the 24-year-old punching Dutch rider Marijn Maas in the head at the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race in the Netherlands on March 7. The Union Cycliste Internationale confirmed Watts accepted the penalty, which includes a suspension period ending on May 2. The organization stated, "Kiaan Watts will serve a 25-day suspension, with credit given for the one-day team-imposed suspension on March 8." Watts took to social media to apologize, attributing his actions to a momentary lapse in judgment. His team, NSN Development, also issued a formal apology for the incident. The team emphasized its expectation for riders to maintain a sporting and professional demeanor at all times, extending apologies to Maas, the BEAT CC p/b Saxo team, race organizers, and UCI officials.
