The match began with a rapid pace as Scienza made an early impact, getting down the left and crossing for Tom Fellows, who was unable to capitalize due to a heavy first touch. Derby was forced into an early change when Bobby Clark limped off, replaced by Oscar Fraulo in the ninth minute. Despite showing intent, Derby's Max Johnston shot wastefully into the side netting after a smart exchange with Morris. A sweeping Saints attack later saw Finn Azaz shoot straight at Richard O'Donnell. Derby, missing the injured Patrick Agyemang, took the lead when Morris scored after Joe Ward's corner deflected off Casper Jander. However, Saints pushed for a quick reply, with Harwood-Bellis nodding Ryan Manning's free-kick wide.
