Glasgow's Hopes of Reaching Champions Cup Semi-Finals Dashed by Toulon

Glasgow Warriors' bid to secure a maiden Investec Champions Cup semi-final spot was thwarted by a narrow 22-19 loss to RC Toulon at Scotstoun. Having entered the match as slight favourites, courtesy of their impressive home form and Toulon's struggles in their domestic league, Franco Smith's side were ultimately edged out by the three-time European champions. The defeat means Toulon will face either Leinster or Sale in the last four. Glasgow were forced to make a late adjustment to their lineup when Max Williamson was ruled out, with Macenzzie Duncan taking his place among the replacements. The home team drew first blood after a cautious start, capitalising on Toulon's penalty woes in their own 22. Alex Samuel secured the lineout before finding Ben Afshar, whose pass inside allowed Stafford McDowall to cross for the opening try. However, Toulon swiftly responded through Jeremy Sinzelle, who received a long pass from Ben White and offloaded to Gael Drean to score. A trademark run by Kyle Steyn then propelled Glasgow back into Toulon territory, but after a series of pick-and-go attempts, Sione Tuipulotu was halted just shy of the line. Toulon then assumed the lead for the first time, as Melvyn Jaminet passed wide to Drean, who utilised his pace to outstrip Dan Lancaster and claim his second try. Glasgow regained the ascendancy in the second half, with Gregor Hiddleston breaking off a lineout maul to stretch for the line. The French side enjoyed a period of pressure near the Glasgow line but were repelled by the defence, which eventually won a penalty to alleviate the danger. Toulon eventually broke through when Nacho Brex identified a gap and burst through to power over the line. Warriors mounted one final assault in pursuit of a comeback, but their opponents forced a turnover to secure the victory. In another Champions Cup quarter-final, Leinster Rugby ran in six tries to trounce Sale Sharks 43-13 and book their place in the semi-finals, where they will meet Toulon. The Irish province made a flawless start at the Aviva Stadium, with hooker Dan Sheehan crashing over for a 10th-minute try after they had secured line-out ball. Sale reduced the deficit with a penalty from George Ford six minutes before the break, but their hopes were dealt a blow when Dan du Preez was yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on. Full-back Hugo Keenan extended Leinster's lead with a second try three minutes after the restart, and despite a second Ford penalty, the hosts continued to dominate.
