Marie-Louise Eta Makes History as First Female Head Coach in Top European Leagues

Marie-Louise Eta has achieved a milestone by becoming the first female head coach in the top five European men's leagues, taking the reins at Union Berlin. She will initially serve as an interim coach for the men's team before transitioning to the women's team next season. Eta previously made history in 2023 as the first woman to hold an assistant coaching position in the Bundesliga and among Europe's top divisions. Union Berlin's sporting director, Horst Heldt, expressed his delight at Eta's appointment, stating that she will take on the role before assuming her planned position as head coach of the women's first team in the summer. Eta stated that she is aware of the challenges ahead, given the points gap in the lower half of the table, but is confident that the team will secure the necessary points to remain in the Bundesliga. She replaces Steffen Baumgart, who was let go along with his assistants following the team's 3-1 loss to Heidenheim. England manager Sarina Wiegman praised Eta's appointment, calling her a trailblazer and a sign of football's progress.
