San Siro Stadium in Milan May Host ATP Wimbledon Warm-Up Event Starting 2028

A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament, serving as a Wimbledon warm-up event, is set to take place in Milan from 2028. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, previously held in Brussels. Milan's iconic San Siro stadium, with a capacity of over 75,000, is a potential venue for the event. According to federation president Angelo Binaghi, the tournament will be held annually in June, and while the location is not yet finalized, northern Italy is the likely destination due to climate considerations. Binaghi drew inspiration from the Madrid Open, which is introducing practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting that San Siro could be a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a grass-court WTA tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation also hosts the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030, the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, and the Rome Masters on clay. Additionally, work on a retractable roof for the Foro Italico's Campo Centrale is scheduled to commence after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, aiming for completion by the 2028 edition. Binaghi expressed his ambition to establish the Rome tournament as a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells. Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is also striving to become the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico in 50 years.
