Hull FC Announces Coaching Change as Cartwright Departs, Paving the Way for McNamara's 2027 Arrival

John Cartwright has relinquished his position as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately, as the club prepares for Steve McNamara's arrival in 2027. This development follows a joint announcement by Hull FC and Warrington Wolves, confirming McNamara's appointment as the new head coach for the 2027 Betfred Super League season. Although Cartwright is no longer at the helm, he remains employed by Hull FC. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the role of head coach for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign. Notably, McNamara's return to his boyhood club marks a significant moment, as he previously rose through the youth ranks and went on to make over 160 senior appearances between 1989 and 1996, earning international recognition with England and Great Britain. With a distinguished coaching career spanning two decades, McNamara has made a lasting impact with Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, the England international side, and in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with the Dragons, McNamara led the team to unprecedented success, including a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield win, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his enthusiasm for McNamara's appointment, stating, "We are delighted to secure Steve's services. He is a coach of the highest calibre, and someone who truly understands this club and the city." Additionally, Hull FC chairman Andrew Thirkill commented, "We believe Steve is the right person to lead Hull FC into our next phase and are thrilled with his appointment. His experience, leadership, and standards will be critical as we build a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League." This season, Sky Sports will broadcast every Super League game live, including two exclusive matches per round and five additional matches each week on Sky Sports+.
