England Lock Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement Plans

Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots at the end of the current season. With 70 international caps to his name, Launchbury has had a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and participating in two Rugby World Cups, in 2015 and 2019. Since joining Harlequins from Toyota Verblitz in 2023, Launchbury has made 50 appearances, although his playing time has been limited to just six games this term. In a statement on the Harlequins website, Launchbury expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he has had, saying, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He reflected on his time playing for England, Wasps, and Harlequins, as well as his experience in Japan, and thanked his teammates, past and present, for the friendships they have built. Launchbury acknowledged that rugby has given him a sense of purpose, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable memories. However, he feels that his body needs a break, and he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and potentially staying involved in the sport in a different capacity.
