Grey Dawning Edges Thrilling Melling Chase Over Solness

In a masterful performance, Grey Dawning successfully dropped back in distance to outmaneuver the long-time leader Solness in the JCB Melling Chase at Aintree. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, Solness took the front-running position, moving up from two miles and disputing the early lead with Gidleigh Park before taking a two-length lead down the back straight. However, Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning, having finished fourth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was waiting in the wings, jumping well and racing enthusiastically. With two fences to go, Harry Skelton moved the 5-1 chance to the front, and despite Solness's refusal to back down, Grey Dawning's stamina ultimately saw him edge a neck verdict. Dan Skelton explained the decision to drop back to two and a half miles, stating, 'We were doing well but not quite winning, so we had to change things and try something different.' Skelton also noted that the cheekpieces were added as 'a little something extra' for the shorter trip. The victory was a bittersweet one, coming after the loss of owner Robert Kirkland's wife. Jockey J J Slevin praised Solness's performance, saying, 'It was a great run, Joseph brought him here in great shape.' Henry de Bromhead reflected on the Ryanair Chase winner Heart Wood's third-place finish, saying, 'It all just happened a bit quick over a furlong shorter on a sharper track.' Jo Tizzard was pleased with JPR One's fourth-place finish, stating, 'He's run another great race but he just comes up a bit shy in Grade Ones.'
