Liverpool Breathe a Sigh of Relief as Ngumoha Steals the Show in Win Over Fulham

Liverpool halted their three-game losing streak and alleviated some pressure on manager Arne Slot with a 2-0 victory over Fulham. At just 17 years and 225 days old, Rio Ngumoha made history as Liverpool's youngest Premier League goalscorer at Anfield, scoring the opening goal with a stunning strike. Mohamed Salah soon doubled the lead with a classic finish, netting only his second Premier League goal since November. Despite facing 19 shots and nine corners, Liverpool managed the game without any major scares, a welcome change from their recent trend of conceding two or more goals in the final 20 minutes of Premier League matches. The win gives Liverpool a cushion in the pursuit of the final Champions League spot, with the gap to sixth-placed Chelsea now at four points. Slot's team had won just two of their previous eight games in all competitions, and after being outplayed by Manchester City and Paris St Germain, the Dutchman was under scrutiny heading into this fixture. Liverpool's first-half performance was aided by a rusty Fulham side, who were playing their first game in three weeks and struggled to find their rhythm, allowing Ngumoha and Salah to do the damage. The home team's lineup consisted of Mamardashvili, Frimpong, Robertson, Van Dijk, Konate, Szoboszlai, Jones, Ngumoha, Wirtz, Salah, and Gakpo, with Gravenberch, Mac Allister, and Gomez coming off the bench. In contrast, Fulham's starting eleven included Leno, Castagne, Andersen, Bassey, Robinson, Berge, Iwobi, Wilson, King, Bobb, and Muniz, with Smith Rowe, Lukic, Jimenez, Chukwueze, and Sessegnon introduced later in the game. Ngumoha was named Player of the Match after his impressive display. Florian Wirtz's driving run led to the 36th-minute opener, which Ngumoha finished brilliantly, wrong-footing Timothy Castagne before curling the ball into the far corner. It was the 17-year-old's first goal since his dramatic late winner at Newcastle in August. Ngumoha was involved again as Liverpool doubled their lead four minutes later, picking out Gakpo, who controlled and laid off for Salah to clip home across goal. After netting 29 goals in last season's title-winning campaign, it was only the Egyptian's sixth Premier League goal of the season. Fulham dominated territory after the break but had a goal ruled out for offside, and Rodrigo Muniz failed to make the most of a free header. Emile Smith Rowe missed the target from 12 yards, giving Liverpool some breathing space. Sky Sports' Jamie Redknapp praised Ngumoha's natural X-factor, saying, 'The potential was so obvious. Everybody could see it. He just had sort of a natural X-factor.' Liverpool boss Arne Slot also commended Ngumoha, stating, 'One of his strengths is dominating the one-on-one. We've seen this season that he gets more and more playing time. That's what he deserves because every time he plays, he does really well.'
