England's Joe Launchbury Announces Retirement Plans

Veteran England lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the current season. Launchbury, who has earned 70 caps for England between 2012 and 2022, has enjoyed a storied career, claiming three Six Nations titles and representing his country at the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups. Following a stint with Wasps, Launchbury joined Quins from Japan's Toyota Verblitz in 2023, making 50 appearances, although he has been limited to just six outings this term. In a statement on Harlequins' website, Launchbury reflected on his decision, stating, "The time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season." He expressed his gratitude to his teammates, past and present, and acknowledged the profound impact rugby has had on his life, providing him with a sense of purpose, lasting friendships, and cherished memories. Launchbury, now 35, feels his body is telling him it's time for a break, and while he hopes to remain involved in the sport, he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and watching his children grow up.
