England Faces Scotland with Debutant Demelza Short Amidst Injury Crisis
England's Red Roses are adapting to a series of setbacks as they prepare for their Guinness Women's Six Nations match against Scotland, with head coach John Mitchell remaining optimistic despite the growing list of absent players. Mitchell has made significant changes to the starting lineup, introducing 19-year-old Demelza Short as a blindside flanker. Other newcomers include fly-half Zoe Harrison, full-back Emma Sing, lock Abi Burton, and prop Maud Muir, as England seeks to build on their initial 33-12 victory over Ireland. Notably, Ellie Kildunne has been moved to the left wing to make room for Sing, while Maddie Feaunati has shifted from blindside flanker to No 8 following Alex Matthews' injury. The team is dealing with the loss of several key players, including Hannah Botterman, Morwenna Talling, Natasha Hunt, May Campbell, and Tatyana Heard, all of whom have been ruled out for the tournament. Additionally, Zoe Stratford, Abbie Ward, Rosie Galligan, and Lark Atkin-Davies are unavailable due to pregnancy. Coach Mitchell views these challenges as opportunities for growth, stating, 'We've had to adapt to a number of changes with injuries to team-mates who are hugely valued within the group, but that's part of the culture we're building.' Defence coach Sarah Hunter also sees the current situation as a chance to develop younger players in preparation for the 2029 World Cup, saying, 'It's almost good that we're having this situation now so that we can grow and develop some of the younger players coming through who might be there in four years' time.' The starting XV includes Emma Sing, Jess Breach, Megan Jones, Helena Rowland, Ellie Kildunne, Zoe Harrison, Lucy Packer, Kelsey Clifford, Amy Cokayne, Maud Muir, Abi Burton, Lilli Ives Campion, Demelza Short, Sadia Kabeya, and Maddie Feaunati, with replacements including Connie Powell, Mackenzie Carson, Sarah Bern, Haineala Lutui, Marlie Packer, Flo Robinson, Holly Aitchison, and Mia Venner.
