Hull FC Announces Coaching Change as Cartwright Departs and McNamara Prepares to Take the Reins

In a significant development, John Cartwright has relinquished his position as head coach of Hull FC, effective immediately. This move comes as Steve McNamara is slated to take over the role starting from the 2027 Betfred Super League season, as jointly confirmed by Hull FC and Warrington Wolves. Although Cartwright will remain employed by Hull FC, he has formally stepped down from his coaching duties. In the interim, assistant coach Andy Last will assume the head coach position for the remainder of the current season. Meanwhile, McNamara will continue to serve as assistant coach at Warrington Wolves for the duration of the 2026 campaign. Notably, McNamara's return to his boyhood club marks a homecoming for the esteemed coach, who rose through the youth ranks and went on to make over 160 senior appearances for the team between 1989 and 1996. His illustrious playing career also included representation for England and Great Britain. As one of the leading coaches in the sport, McNamara boasts an impressive two-decade coaching career, with notable stints at Bradford Bulls, Catalans Dragons, and the England international side, as well as experience in the NRL with Sydney Roosters and New Zealand Warriors. During his tenure with Catalans Dragons, McNamara led the team to its most successful period, highlighted by a Challenge Cup final victory, a League Leaders Shield win, and two Super League Grand Final appearances. Hull FC chief executive Richie Myler expressed his enthusiasm for McNamara's appointment, stating, 'We are thrilled to secure Steve's services. He is a coach of the highest calibre, with an intrinsic understanding of this club and the city.' Additionally, Hull FC chairman Andrew Thirkill commented, 'We believe Steve is the ideal person to lead Hull FC into our next phase and are delighted with his appointment. His experience, leadership, and standards will be crucial as we build a team capable of competing consistently at the top of Super League.' This season, Sky Sports will once again broadcast every Super League game live, including two exclusive matches per round and the remaining five matches each week on Sky Sports+.
