Tottenham's Season Takes Another Hit as Captain Cristian Romero Suffers Season-Ending Injury

A severe knee injury has ruled Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero out for the remainder of the season. The Argentine defender was forced off the field in tears during Sunday's 1-0 loss to Sunderland after a collision with his own goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, while attempting to defend against Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey. Contrary to initial reports suggesting Romero might recover in time for the World Cup, his club season is now over. This setback deals a significant blow to relegation-threatened Tottenham, who are currently in the bottom three of the Premier League and two points from safety with only six league games left to play. Romero's absence is the latest in a series of injury issues for new manager Roberto De Zerbi, who had earlier expressed reliance on Mohammed Kudus before the forward suffered a new quad injury. De Zerbi had highlighted Romero's importance to the team, describing him as a 'crucial player' after the Sunderland defeat. Kevin Danso is likely to replace Romero for the rest of the season, having come on as a substitute for him in the Sunderland game. Romero now faces a challenge to regain fitness in time for Argentina's World Cup title defense in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, with their first game scheduled for June 17. The injury occurred when Brobbey, who was already on a yellow card, pushed Romero, leading to questions about whether the striker should have been sent off. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, however, believes that while the outcome was unfortunate, the push itself did not constitute a serious foul that would have warranted a second yellow card and a sending off. Ex-Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd agreed, noting that Romero was trying to shield the ball and Brobbey's actions, although they resulted in Romero's injury, were part of the normal defensive maneuvers. Tottenham's performance under new manager De Zerbi has done little to alleviate concerns about their ability to avoid relegation, with many of their longstanding issues still evident. The appointment of De Zerbi, one of the highest-paid head coaches in the division, is seen as a high-stakes gamble in an attempt to turn the club's fortunes around. However, with the same problems persisting under different management, there are growing concerns about Tottenham's future in the Premier League. Sky Sports' Laura Hunter and Jamie Carragher have expressed their skepticism about Tottenham's chances, with Carragher stating his belief that the team looks likely to be relegated. Tottenham's upcoming fixtures include games against Brighton, Wolves, Aston Villa, Leeds, Chelsea, and Everton, with their first match being against Brighton at home.
