Mercedes Conducting Intensive Behind-the-Scenes Work to Enhance Race Starts

According to George Russell, the Mercedes team is diligently working to improve their race starts, a crucial area of focus ahead of the upcoming Miami Grand Prix in May. Despite achieving four front-row lockouts in the initial three Grands Prix and Sprint events, neither Russell nor teammate Kimi Antonelli has managed to secure the lead after the opening lap. The team's inability to start strongly is their most significant weakness, but they have demonstrated sufficient pace to recover and win the first three races. Ferrari, on the other hand, has excelled in starts this season, thanks to their compact turbo, which enables quicker spin-up times and facilitates finding the optimal launch window. Drivers are limited in their opportunities to practice starts, with the only chance being at the end of free practice sessions during a Grand Prix weekend. Russell emphasized that while practice opportunities are scarce, the team is meticulously analyzing data to address their weakness. In an interview with Sky Germany during Pirelli tire testing in Germany, Russell stated, 'There is a tremendous amount of work being done behind the scenes.' He noted that the team is dedicating numerous days to simulator analysis, reviewing the first three races, and preparing for the upcoming events. With two sprint races scheduled upon their return, including Miami and Montreal, the team is fully focused on improvement. Although they are not permitted to practice starts during tire testing, Russell expressed the team's eagerness to work on this aspect, acknowledging the difficulties of their sport, where practice opportunities are restricted.
