Arsenal's Creative Drought: A Threat to Their Title Ambitions?

In the latest installment of The Debrief, a Sky Sports column that analyzes key Premier League stories using data and opinion, we examine Arsenal's struggles with creativity in open play. The team's recent defeat to Bournemouth, coupled with Manchester City's victory over Chelsea, has put the title back in the balance. However, it was Arsenal's lackluster performance that raised more concerns. Despite Andoni Iraola's Bournemouth playing some impressive football, Mikel Arteta's team failed to create scoring opportunities, with an expected goals total from open play of just 0.18. This was not an isolated incident, as Arsenal have consistently struggled to create chances from open play, with six matches this season having an open-play expected goals total of 0.3 or lower. In fact, among the top-six teams in the Premier League, they have had more such matches than Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea combined. This lack of creativity could be a significant obstacle in their title pursuit, especially considering that the eventual winners of the competition have typically ranked among the top two in open-play creativity. Meanwhile, West Ham's 4-0 win over Wolves has moved them out of the relegation zone, thanks in part to Jarrod Bowen's two assists. Bowen has been a consistent performer for the Irons, with eight goal involvements in the Premier League this season, and his output has been impressive since joining the team in January 2020. He ranks among the top half a dozen players in the Premier League for goal involvements and is on track to join an exclusive club of players with 20 goal involvements in each of the last three Premier League seasons. Elsewhere, Sunderland's Brian Brobbey has been making a name for himself as a talented young striker, with his ability to hold the ball up and retain possession after receiving it being particularly impressive. According to statistics, Brobbey has held the ball up 48 times this season, with a success rate higher than anyone else near the top of that list. His total of six Premier League goals may seem modest, but all six have been the final goal of the game, directly winning Sunderland eight points.
