Great Britain has taken a significant step towards securing a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, thanks to impressive victories by Mika Stojsavljevic and Harriet Dart over their Australian counterparts in Melbourne. Stojsavljevic, ranked 275th in the world, pulled off a stunning upset against world No. 65 Talia Gibson, winning 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 in her debut Billie Jean King Cup match. The 17-year-old, who is the 2024 US Open junior champion, overcame a 219-place difference in the WTA rankings to give Britain a perfect start in the qualifiers. Stojsavljevic initially took a 3-1 lead but required a tie-break to claim the first set and later successfully defended five break points to close out a tightly contested second set that saw five breaks of serve. The young champion expressed her amazement at the win, praising the support she received from the British team. Harriet Dart followed up Stojsavljevic's victory with a hard-fought win against Kimberly Birrell, coming from behind to win 4-6 6-3 6-3. With this win, Britain now needs just one more victory from the remaining three matches to qualify for the finals in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for September 22-27. Dart will team up with Jodie Burrage in the doubles rubber on Saturday, aiming to complete the tie for Britain against Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez.
