Sinner Regains Top Spot in the World Rankings with Monte Carlo Victory

Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the number one spot in the world rankings after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Sinner navigated the windy conditions in Monaco more effectively than his opponent, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win to take the top position in the ATP rankings from Alcaraz for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not reach the same heights as some of the thrilling encounters between the two players last year, it was marked by several twists and turns as Sinner overcame a deficit in the second set to emerge victorious. This win marks the first time Sinner has beaten Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extends his remarkable unbeaten run to 22 matches in Masters tournaments, the level below Grand Slams. Sinner expressed his delight at regaining the number one spot, stating, 'The result is amazing. Returning to No 1 means a lot to me.' He also joins an elite group of players, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, as the only men to win four consecutive ATP 1000 titles. Alcaraz praised Sinner, saying, 'It's impressive what you are achieving right now. To win the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo, it's incredible. Congratulations on the work you're doing with your team.' The 17th meeting between the two tennis superstars will not be remembered as a classic due to the challenging, windy conditions. Alcaraz made a strong start, breaking Sinner immediately, but the latter quickly leveled the score at 2-2. Neither player could gain a decisive advantage in the first set, despite Sinner having break point opportunities in the fifth and ninth games. At 6-5 up, Alcaraz came close to winning the set but Sinner's strong serving helped him escape trouble, and he eventually won the set in a tie-break after 74 minutes. In the second set, Alcaraz broke early but struggled to hold his serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and get back to 3-3. Sinner then won the next three games, taking advantage of Alcaraz's frustration and inconsistency to secure his first Monte-Carlo Masters title. The two players will now decide whether to face each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also be in action, before competing in ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome leading up to the French Open in May. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open on Sunday, defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3. Andreeva had to come from behind, rallying from a set down to claim her second WTA title and fourth of her career. During the presentation ceremony, Andreeva praised Potapova, saying, 'I was struggling to find a solution to play against you today. You're an amazing fighter and an even better person.' Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed her gratitude for the crowd's support, stating, 'Playing here for the first time as an Austrian means the world to me. I am really thankful for the support I received this week.'
