A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament is set to debut in Milan starting from 2028, with the possibility of being held at the renowned San Siro stadium. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, previously held in Brussels, and plans to host it annually in June. While the venue is yet to be confirmed, San Siro, with its massive capacity of over 75,000, is a strong contender due to its location in northern Italy, which is deemed suitable for the event due to climate reasons. The federation's president, Angelo Binaghi, mentioned that the example set by the Madrid Open, which is introducing practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, makes San Siro a viable option.
Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. Additionally, the federation is hosting several other prominent tennis events, including the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna. Ambitious plans are also underway to make the Rome Masters a potential fifth Grand Slam, competing with major tournaments like Indian Wells. The development of a retractable roof for the Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico is scheduled to begin after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, aiming for completion by the 2028 edition.
