Sinner Regains Top Spot in the World Rankings After Defeating Alcaraz in Monte Carlo

Following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world No 1 spot. Sinner outperformed Alcaraz in the windy conditions in Monaco, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win to take the top position in the ATP rankings for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not quite live up to the high standards set by the two players last year, it was filled with twists and turns as Sinner overcame a second-set deficit. This victory marks Sinner's first win over Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extends his unbeaten run to 22 matches in Masters tournaments. Sinner expressed his delight at reclaiming the top spot, stating that it means a great deal to him, but emphasized that the ranking is secondary to his joy at winning a significant trophy on this surface. Alcaraz praised Sinner's achievements, saying it's impressive what he's accomplishing, particularly winning the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo. The 17th meeting between the two tennis superstars will not be remembered as a classic due to the challenging, windy conditions. Initially, Alcaraz broke Sinner but the latter equalized at 2-2. Neither player could break each other for the remainder of the first set, despite Sinner having break point opportunities in the fifth and ninth games. At 6-5 up, Alcaraz was close to taking the set but Sinner's strong serving helped him escape trouble, and he ultimately won the set in a tie-break after 74 minutes. In the second set, Alcaraz broke early but struggled to hold serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and get back to 3-3. Sinner then won the next three games, taking advantage of Alcaraz's frustration to secure his first Monte-Carlo Masters title. The two players will now decide whether to compete again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also be in action, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome leading up to the French Open. In other news, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open, defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3, after rallying from a set down to claim her second WTA title. Andreeva praised Potapova as an amazing fighter and person during the presentation ceremony. Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed gratitude for the support she received from the crowd, saying it meant the world to her.
