Sinner Regains Top Spot in World Rankings After Defeating Alcaraz in Monte Carlo

Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the number one spot in the world rankings after a straight-sets victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final. Sinner coped better with the windy conditions in Monaco, winning 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to take the top spot in the ATP rankings from Alcaraz for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not reach the same level as some of the thrilling encounters between the two players last year, it was filled with twists and turns as Sinner overcame a deficit in the second set to secure the win. This victory marked Sinner's first win over Alcaraz on clay since 2022 and extended his impressive 22-match unbeaten streak at Masters tournaments. Sinner expressed his delight at regaining the top spot, saying, "The result is amazing. Returning to No 1 means a lot to me. At the same time, the ranking is secondary. I'm very happy to have won a big trophy on this surface for the first time." Alcaraz praised Sinner, saying, "It's impressive what you are achieving right now. To win the Sunshine Double and Monte-Carlo, it's incredible. Congratulations on the work you're doing with your team." The 17th meeting between the two tennis superstars will not be remembered as a classic due to the challenging conditions. Alcaraz started strongly, breaking Sinner immediately, but Sinner leveled the score at 2-2. Neither player could gain a decisive advantage in the first set, despite Sinner having break point opportunities in the fifth and ninth games. Sinner eventually won the set in a tie-break after 74 minutes. In the second set, Alcaraz broke early but struggled to hold serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and get back to 3-3. Sinner went on to win the next three games, sealing his first Monte-Carlo Masters title as Alcaraz became frustrated with the variability in his play. The two players will now decide whether to face each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also be in action, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome lead up to the French Open in May. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open on Sunday, defeating Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3. Andreeva had to come back from a set down to claim her second WTA title and fourth of her career. Andreeva praised Potapova, saying, "I was struggling to find a solution to play against you today. You're an amazing fighter and an even better person." Potapova, who switched allegiance to Austria in December, expressed her gratitude for the support she received from the crowd, saying, "Playing here for the first time as an Austrian, for me, it means the world. All the support I was getting this week from the crowd, I never had it in my life. I am really thankful."
