Exeter Secures Challenge Cup Semifinal Spot with Thrilling Win Over Benetton

A dramatic late penalty kick by Henry Slade allowed Exeter to narrowly defeat Benetton 44-41, setting the stage for a semifinal match against Ulster in Belfast. After Jacob Umaga's try put the hosts ahead 41-38 with 15 minutes remaining, Slade responded by kicking a penalty to level the score four minutes later. He then sealed the victory with another penalty in the 78th minute, drawing the ire of the home crowd. The first half was marked by a frenzied pace, with Exeter taking a 14-7 lead thanks to an early score by Olly Woodburn and a penalty try. They extended their advantage to 24-14 following a try by Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and a conversion and penalty by Slade. However, the hosts managed to level the score by halftime, courtesy of an outstanding try from Onisi Ratave, a conversion, and a penalty by Umaga. Exeter regained the lead two minutes into the second half with a converted try by Harvey Skinner. Although Bautista Bernasconi brought Benetton level, Exeter pulled ahead 38-31 when Andrea Zambonin scored from close range in the 48th minute. Umaga's second penalty in the 63rd minute and his subsequent try, which he converted, gave Benetton their first lead since the eighth minute. Nonetheless, Slade's decisive kick ultimately decided the outcome. In another matchup, reigning Investec Champions Cup champions Bordeaux overcame Toulouse 30-15 to advance to a semifinal against Bath. Toulouse started strongly at Stade Chaban-Delmas but Bordeaux's defense held firm until Maxime Lamothe scored off a maul in the 23rd minute. Toulouse responded immediately from the restart, with Yoram Moefana failing to catch the kick-off and Romain Ntamack eventually darting in on the right. A late first-half stoppage occurred after Toulouse prop Dorian Aldegheri made contact with Damian Penaud's head while he was kicking the ball, resulting in a 20-minute red card and a head injury assessment for Penaud. Despite this, Toulouse took the lead into the break after a sweeping passing move sent Teddy Thomas clear down the right, giving them a 12-5 advantage. After Thomas Ramos extended Toulouse's lead with an early second-half penalty, Bordeaux fought back. Matthieu Jalibert collected his own kick-through on the right before diving over, and Toulouse were briefly down another player when Antoine Dupont received a yellow card in the 56th minute for a trip. Bordeaux gained control of the quarterfinal tie when Ben Tameifuna barged over and Maxime Lucu landed a long-range penalty just after the hour. Any hopes of a late comeback were extinguished with six minutes left when Arthur Retiere touched down Bordeaux's fourth try in the corner, followed by another Lucu penalty.
