Milan's San Siro Stadium May Host Grass-Court Tennis Event from 2028

A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament, serving as a Wimbledon warm-up event, is set to take place in Milan starting in 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium being a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, previously held in Brussels, and plans to host it annually in June. While the exact location is yet to be finalized, the federation's president, Angelo Binaghi, hinted that the San Siro, with its vast capacity, could be an ideal choice due to its location in northern Italy. The introduction of practice courts within stadiums, as seen in the Madrid Open, also makes the San Siro a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a grass-court WTA tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation is also set to host the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, in addition to the Rome Masters on clay. Furthermore, plans are underway to install a retractable roof at the Foro Italico, with work commencing after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia. Binaghi expressed his ambition to elevate the Rome tournament to the status of a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells. The Italian tennis scene is also abuzz with Jannik Sinner's bid to become the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico in 50 years, since Adriano Panatta's victory.
