Mateta Makes Mark on Return as Crystal Palace Dominate Fiorentina

Jean-Philippe Mateta celebrated his first start since January with a goal as Crystal Palace took a significant step towards the Conference League semi-finals with a convincing 3-0 victory over Fiorentina. Mateta, who had been out of the starting lineup since January 25, scored from the penalty spot, before Tyrick Mitchell doubled the lead, capitalizing on a defensive error by Fiorentina. Ismaila Sarr sealed the win with a late goal, putting Palace in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Florence. The win marked Palace's fifth consecutive match without a defeat and extended their unbeaten run in the Conference League to seven games. Crystal Palace's renewed energy was evident from the start, following a three-week break, with the team displaying a different level of intensity. Fiorentina, who are struggling to avoid relegation in Serie A, found it difficult to cope with Palace's intense start. The game's pace culminated in a late challenge by Dodo on Evann Guessand, resulting in a penalty that Mateta calmly slotted past David de Gea. Minutes later, Daichi Kamada's ball over the top found Daniel Munoz, who played it across to Mateta, and after De Gea saved the initial effort, Mitchell followed up to score. Fiorentina had a brief spell of pressure in the second half but were largely unable to test Henderson, except for a shot that hit the bar. Before Sarr sealed the win, burying a Kamada cross, Fiorentina's hopes were all but over. In a post-match interview, Mateta expressed his happiness at scoring, stating, 'What a night. It's been a long time, I didn't play, I didn't start. I'm very happy and very happy my guy (Mitchell) scored as well.' Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner praised Mateta, saying, 'I think that's what JP deserves. He always gives 100 per cent effort to the team, 100 per cent effort for Crystal Palace.' Glasner also commended his team's performance, particularly in the first half and the final 20 minutes of the game, and acknowledged the great energy from the fans at Selhurst Park.
