Former Arsenal Goalkeeper Alex Manninger Passes Away After Fatal Road Accident

Austrian goalkeeper Alex Manninger, who played a crucial role in Arsenal's 1997/98 double-winning season, has tragically passed away in a road accident. His former club, Red Bull Salzburg, confirmed the news. Manninger, 48, made a total of seven appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League that season, filling in for the injured David Seaman, and memorably saved a penalty in the FA Cup semi-final shootout against West Ham. During his five-year stint with the Gunners, Manninger made 64 appearances before moving on to play for several clubs, including Fiorentina, Siena, Juventus, Red Bull Salzburg, and Augsburg. Although he ended his career at Liverpool, he did not make any appearances for the Reds. Arsenal expressed their shock and sadness at the news, stating: "The entire Arsenal family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our former goalkeeper, Alex Manninger. Our thoughts and condolences are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time." Manninger earned 33 caps for Austria and was part of the national team that participated in the 2008 European Championship. Red Bull Salzburg, where Manninger began his career, paid tribute to him on social media, saying: "We are mourning the loss of our former goalkeeper, Alexander Manninger, who tragically passed away in a traffic accident. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Alexander."
