Britain on Verge of Billie Jean King Cup Victory as Stojsavljevic Stuns Higher-Ranked Opponent
Mika Stojsavljevic, ranked 275th in the world, and Harriet Dart have propelled a depleted Great Britain to the cusp of securing a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals against Australia in Melbourne. Stojsavljevic made a stunning debut, defeating world No 65 Talia Gibson 7-6 (7-4) 7-5, overcoming a 219-place difference in the WTA rankings. The 17-year-old, who recently won the 2024 US Open junior title, gave Great Britain a perfect start in the qualifiers, compensating for the absence of key players like Emma Raducanu and Fran Jones. Stojsavljevic's victory was followed by Harriet Dart's comeback win over Kiimberly Birrell 4-6 6-3 6-3, leaving Britain one win away from qualifying for the finals in Shenzhen, China. Dart will team up with Jodie Burrage in the doubles rubber to potentially seal the win for Britain.
