I Am Maximus Reclaims Grand National Title

In a historic feat, I Am Maximus became the first horse to reclaim the Grand National title since the legendary Red Rum, winning the 2026 Randox Grand National. The race was marked by early drama, including the fall of last year's third-place finisher, Grangeclare West, and Panic Attack at the third fence. I Am Maximus, ridden by Paul Townend, tracked the inside path, ultimately overtaking the competition to secure his second Grand National win. This victory also marked a record fourth win in the race for owner JP McManus, with his horse Iroko finishing second. Trainer Willie Mullins, who joins the ranks of four-time National-winning handlers, praised I Am Maximus, calling him a 'superb horse' who got a 'fantastic ride.' Mullins noted that the modern-day National might be changing, making it possible for top-weight horses to secure wins. Jockey Paul Townend described I Am Maximus as 'tough,' saying he would 'gallop to the end of the world' for his rider. The Grand National also saw a dominant display by Home By The Lee in the Jet2 Liverpool Hurdle, where the 11-year-old won by seven lengths under J J Slevin.
