Sinner Regains Top Spot in ATP Rankings After Triumph in Monte Carlo

Following his victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final, Jannik Sinner has reclaimed the world No 1 spot. Sinner outperformed Alcaraz in the challenging, windy conditions in Monaco, securing a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 win and taking the top position in the ATP rankings for the first time since November 2025. Although the match did not showcase the exceptional heights of tennis' top two players from the previous year, it was filled with twists and turns as Sinner overcame a deficit in the second set. This marks the first time Sinner has beaten Alcaraz on clay since 2022, and he extends his unbeaten streak to 22 matches in Masters tournaments, the level just below Grand Slams. Sinner expressed his delight, stating, 'The result is amazing. Returning to No 1 means a lot to me.' He joins an elite group, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, as one of the few men to win four consecutive ATP 1000 titles. Alcaraz congratulated Sinner, acknowledging his impressive achievements, including the Sunshine Double and the Monte-Carlo title. The 17th meeting between these tennis superstars will not be remembered as a classic due to the difficult conditions. Despite Alcaraz's strong start, breaking Sinner early on, the latter recovered to 2-2. The first set remained closely contested, with neither player able to break the other until the tie-break, where Sinner capitalized on a double fault from Alcaraz to take the set. In the second set, Alcaraz initially broke Sinner but struggled to hold serve, allowing Sinner to capitalize on his errors and eventually win the set and the match. Sinner and Alcaraz may face each other again in Barcelona, where Britain's Jack Draper will also compete, before the ATP 1000 events in Madrid and Rome lead up to the French Open. In other news, Mirra Andreeva won the Linz Open, coming back from a set down to defeat Anastasia Potapova 1-6 6-4 6-3, claiming her second WTA title and fourth career title. Andreeva praised Potapova, calling her an 'amazing fighter and an even better person.' Potapova, who recently switched allegiance to Austria, expressed gratitude for the crowd's support, saying it meant the world to her.
