New Policy Prohibits Transgender Women from Competing in Female-Only Darts Tournaments

The Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) has announced that, following a comprehensive review of its Trans and Gender Diverse Policy, it will only permit players who are biological females to compete in women's darts tournaments. This decision was made after consulting with an academic developmental biologist and considering extensive legal advice, as well as recent UK court rulings. The DRA believes that this policy change is necessary to ensure fair competition in the sport. Notably, transgender players will still be allowed to participate in open tournaments. The first transgender woman to compete in the World Championships, Noa-Lynn van Leuven, has strongly criticized the decision, describing it as a significant setback for the transgender community. Van Leuven, who has won six titles on the women's tour since joining in 2022, expressed her disappointment and frustration, stating that she has worked hard to earn her place in the sport and that this decision makes her feel like she no longer belongs. The DRA has emphasized its commitment to inclusivity, encouraging all players to participate in open tournaments, regardless of their biological sex, legal sex, or gender identity. The organization will continue to monitor developments related to transgender participation in sports and review its Eligibility Policy annually.
