Andoni Iraola Set to Depart Bournemouth as Club Shortlists Three Potential Replacements

Bournemouth's head coach, Andoni Iraola, has announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season. With his contract expiring in three months, Iraola had rejected multiple offers to extend his stay amid interest from his former club, Athletic Club, and other Premier League teams. According to Sky Sports News, former RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund manager Marco Rose is among the three candidates shortlisted to succeed Iraola. The outgoing coach has six remaining games with Bournemouth, including a home match against Manchester City on May 17 and a trip to Nottingham Forest on the last day of the Premier League season. In a statement on the club's website, Iraola stated, "This is the right moment for me to step away." Despite efforts to persuade him to stay, Bournemouth respects Iraola's decision, and the two parties maintain a mutual respect. Talks about his contract began over 15 months ago, but Iraola preferred to wait until later in the campaign to have meaningful discussions. The search for a new head coach has been ongoing, with three favored candidates on Bournemouth's shortlist. Currently 11th in the standings, the team could still achieve European qualification, sitting two points behind seventh place, which would secure a spot in the Conference League next season. Since his appointment in June 2023, Iraola has been a popular figure at Bournemouth, implementing an attacking and dynamic style of football. The team finished ninth in the Premier League last season with a club-record 56 points. However, Iraola has had to cope with significant player sales this season, including Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi, Dango Ouattara, and Antoine Semenyo, totaling £253m. Iraola's departure will make him one of the hottest coaching prospects in the Premier League. Athletic Club is interested in bringing him back to the Basque Country as their new head coach, given his 12-year tenure and over 500 games played for the club. Other potential destinations for Iraola include Crystal Palace, Tottenham, and Manchester United, although the latter has not made a decision yet. Speculation surrounding Eddie Howe's future at Newcastle has also led to Iraola being considered a potential replacement.
