Milan's San Siro Stadium May Host ATP Grass-Court Event from 2028

The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to host a 250-level ATP Tour tournament, previously held in Brussels, and plans to stage it in Milan from 2028. The iconic San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan, is a potential venue for the event, which will take place in June. Federation president Angelo Binaghi confirmed that while a decision on the exact location is yet to be made, northern Italy is the preferred region due to climate considerations. Binaghi drew inspiration from the Madrid Open, which is introducing practice courts within Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, suggesting that the San Siro could be a viable option. Italy has previously hosted a WTA grass-court tournament in Gaiba from 2022 to 2024. The federation is also set to host the ATP Finals in Turin until 2030 and the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna until next year, in addition to the Rome Masters on clay ahead of the French Open. The development of a retractable roof for the Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico is scheduled to commence after this year's Internazionali BNL d'Italia, with completion expected in time for the 2028 edition. Binaghi expressed his ambition to establish the Rome tournament as a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells and joining the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open as one of the sport's premier events. Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner is aiming to become the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico since Adriano Panatta's victory 50 years ago.
