To reverse the trend of rivals poaching their senior personnel, Red Bull may need to secure a high-profile signing from another team on the Formula 1 grid, according to recent discussions on The F1 Show podcast. The unexpected departure of Gianpiero 'GP' Lambiase, the team's head of racing and Max Verstappen's engineer, to McLaren from 2028, marks the latest in a series of high-profile exits from the former world champion team since the end of 2023. Lambiase will be joining former colleagues Rob Marshall and Will Courtenay at McLaren, while Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley have also defected to rival teams. The exits of Christian Horner as team principal and Helmut Marko from his advisory role have added to the challenges Red Bull faces.
The Sky Sports F1 panel discussed the difficulties at Red Bull, which has had a tough start to the new era, currently sitting sixth in the Constructors' Championship with just 16 points after three races. Commentator David Croft noted that the team's current performance does not suggest they will be winning soon, which could impact motivation. "They've lost a lot of staff now, not just the headline staff, but people underneath as well," Croft said. "It's not people deserting a sinking ship, but it's people thinking that their success in their careers can lie elsewhere outside of Milton Keynes." Karun Chandhok emphasized the importance of culture in maintaining a winning team and atmosphere, pointing out that Red Bull won six of the last nine Grands Prix last year and arguably had the fastest car.
"The car improved a hell of a lot... Clearly, people need more than just success on track," Chandhok said.
"And I think for whatever reason, this brain drain has gone on, and there's a cultural shift that has happened throughout the organisation." Chandhok suggested that Red Bull needs to figure out how to stop the brain drain and make themselves attractive to top talent, possibly by recruiting from successful teams like Mercedes. The challenge for Red Bull is to rebuild and attract good people who can, in turn, attract other talented individuals. The team's ability to do so will be crucial in determining their future success in the sport.
