In a masterful display of strategy, Grey Dawning successfully dropped back in distance to outmaneuver Solness in the JCB Melling Chase at Aintree. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, Solness, who was stepping up from two miles, took the lead early on, sharing it with Gidleigh Park before asserting dominance down the back straight. However, Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning, fresh from a courageous fourth-place finish in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, was always poised to strike, jumping well and racing with enthusiasm. With two fences to go, Harry Skelton moved the 5-1 chance to the front, and although Solness refused to back down, Grey Dawning's stamina ultimately won out by a neck. Reflecting on the decision to reduce the distance, Dan Skelton noted, 'We were doing well but not quite winning, so we had to try something different.' The victory marked a significant win for owner Robert Kirkland, who has faced personal challenges recently. Jockey J J Slevin praised Solness's performance, saying, 'It was a great run, Joseph had him in great shape.' Meanwhile, Henry de Bromhead attributed Heart Wood's third-place finish to the quicker pace on a shorter track, planning to revisit the horse's distance in the future.
