Glasgow's Champions Cup Hopes Dashed by Toulon in Quarter-Final

Glasgow Warriors' aspirations of reaching their maiden Investec Champions Cup semi-final were shattered as they suffered a narrow 22-19 defeat at the hands of RC Toulon at Scotstoun. Despite entering the match as slight favourites, courtesy of their impressive home form and Toulon's domestic struggles, Franco Smith's side were outdone by the three-time European champions. The visitors claimed a hard-fought victory, scoring four tries to Glasgow's three, to set up a last-four encounter against either Leinster or Sale. Glasgow were compelled to make a late change prior to kick-off, with Macenzzie Duncan replacing the injured Max Williamson on the bench. The home side initially took the lead after a cautious opening, with Toulon incurring a plethora of penalties within their own 22. Glasgow ultimately capitalised on this, with Alex Samuel securing the lineout and finding Ben Afshar, whose pass inside enabled Stafford McDowall to score the opening try. Toulon promptly responded, as a lengthy pass from Ben White found Jeremy Sinzelle, who then moved the ball on to Gael Drean to touch down. A characteristic run from Kyle Steyn subsequently propelled Glasgow back into Toulon territory, but after a series of pick-and-go efforts, Sione Tuipulotu was held up just short of the line. Following a warning from referee Karl Dickson for their ill-discipline, Toulon's Junior Kpoku was shown a yellow card at the next infringement. Glasgow swiftly exploited the numerical advantage, with McDowall delivering a superb pass to Ollie Smith, allowing the winger to dart down the line and score. The hosts soon found themselves on the back foot, as Jean-Baptiste Gros crept over the line for a converted try that levelled the scoreboard at 12-12. Toulon then assumed the lead for the first time in the match, with Melvyn Jaminet passing wide to Drean, who utilised his pace to outmanoeuvre Dan Lancaster and score his second try of the tie. Glasgow commenced the second half in ascendancy and soon regained the lead, as the lineout maul appeared to be drifting into touch before Gregor Hiddleston broke off to stretch for the line. The French side then enjoyed a period of pressure close to the Glasgow line, only for the defence to stand firm before ultimately winning a penalty to alleviate the danger. Toulon eventually broke through when Nacho Brex identified a gap and burst through to power all the way to the line. Warriors enjoyed one final flurry as they sought to reclaim the lead, but their opponents forced the turnover to secure the win. In a separate match, Leinster Rugby ran in six tries to trounce Sale Sharks 43-13 and book their place in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals, where they will face the three-time champions Toulon. Leinster got off to a perfect start at the Aviva Stadium, with hooker Dan Sheehan crashing over to score a 10th-minute try, which Harry Byrne converted. Sale reduced the deficit six minutes before the break with a penalty from England fly-half George Ford, but they were down to 14 men with four minutes left on the clock when number eight Dan du Preez was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. Full-back Hugo Keenan stretched Leinster's lead with a second try three minutes after the restart, and prop Simon McIntyre's yellow card for a high tackle did not aid Sale's cause, despite a second Ford penalty. Flanker Ryan Baird crossed for a third try for the hosts, and wingers Rieko Ioane and Tommy O'Brien followed suit, with Byrne adding the conversions. Sale replacement Alex Willis touched down in the corner, and Ford obliged with the extras, but a Byrne penalty and a converted Jamie Osborne try wrapped up a convincing win.
