Glasgow's Champions Cup Hopes Dashed by Toulon in Quarter-Final

Glasgow Warriors' bid to reach their maiden Investec Champions Cup semi-final was thwarted as they fell 22-19 to RC Toulon at Scotstoun. Despite being favourites due to their strong home record and Toulon's domestic struggles, Franco Smith's side was edged out in a tumultuous match that saw the three-time European champions score four tries to Glasgow's three. The defeat sets up a semi-final clash between Toulon and either Leinster or Sale. Glasgow was forced into a last-minute change when Max Williamson was ruled out, replaced by Macenzzie Duncan on the bench. The home team took the lead after a cautious start, with Toulon racking up penalties in their own 22, allowing Glasgow to capitalize. Alex Samuel secured the lineout, finding Ben Afshar, whose pass inside sent Stafford McDowall over for the first try. Toulon quickly retaliated, with Scotland scrum-half Ben White's long pass finding Jeremy Sinzelle, who moved the ball to Gael Drean for the score. A characteristic Kyle Steyn run then propelled Glasgow back into Toulon territory, but after several pick-and-go efforts, Sione Tuipulotu was held up just short of the line. Toulon's ill-discipline was warned by referee Karl Dickson, and at the next infringement, Junior Kpoku was yellow-carded. Glasgow promptly took advantage of the extra man, with McDowall picking out Ollie Smith with a brilliant pass, allowing the winger to score. The hosts soon found themselves on the back foot, with Jean-Baptiste Gros creeping over the line for a converted try that tied the scoreboard at 12-12. Toulon then took the lead for the first time, with Melvyn Jaminet passing wide to Drean, who used his pace to score his second try. Glasgow started the second half strongly, regaining the lead when the lineout maul seemed to drift into touch, but Gregor Hiddleston broke off to stretch for the line. The French side enjoyed a period of pressure close to the Glasgow line, but the defence held firm before finally winning a penalty to ease the danger. Toulon eventually broke through when Nacho Brex picked a gap and burst through to power to the line. Warriors enjoyed one last flurry, but their opponents forced the turnover to seal the win. In another quarter-final match, Leinster Rugby ran in six tries to trounce Sale Sharks 43-13, booking their place in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals against Toulon. Leinster got off to a perfect start at the Aviva Stadium, with hooker Dan Sheehan crashing over to score a 10th-minute try, and Harry Byrne adding the conversion. Sale reduced the deficit with a penalty from England fly-half George Ford but were down to 14 men when number eight Dan du Preez was yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on. Full-back Hugo Keenan stretched Leinster's lead with a second try after the restart, and despite a second Ford penalty, Leinster's flanker Ryan Baird crossed for a third try, followed by wingers Rieko Ioane and Tommy O'Brien, with Byrne adding the conversions. Sale replacement Alex Willis touched down in the corner, and Ford added the extras, but a Byrne penalty and a converted Jamie Osborne try sealed a convincing win for Leinster.
