Tomkins Leaves Catalans Dragons Due to Personal Circumstances

Joel Tomkins has announced his departure from Catalans Dragons, citing personal reasons for his decision to leave the role of head coach after nearly a year. Tomkins, a former England international in both rugby league and union, found the time spent away from his family to be a significant challenge. Following a brief period back at home, he made the decision to step down from his position, with the team currently sixth in the Super League table after seven games. Initially, Tomkins took on the role as an interim coach after Steve McNamara's departure but was later appointed as the permanent head coach. "My experience at Catalans Dragons over the past 18 months has been filled with both successes and challenges, all of which I have valued greatly as a new head coach," Tomkins stated. "I have gained a great deal of knowledge, both personally and professionally, and I am thankful for the friendships and experiences I have had. I am leaving the club a more skilled coach than when I arrived. However, being away from my family for an extended period has been difficult. After recently spending time at home due to personal reasons, I have decided to step away from my role and end my time at the club. I am very grateful to the players, staff, and supporters, and I wish the club all the best for the remainder of the season and in the future." Tomkins had been absent from the club's last three fixtures, fueling speculation about his potential exit. Ryan Sheridan, along with assistant coaches Micky McIlorum and Mitchell Pearce, will take over as interim head coach, with their first game on April 18 against the top-of-the-table Warrington Wolves in the Super League.
