Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley emphasizes that failure to address the issue of increasing hitting distances in golf is not an option, as it has led to a more one-dimensional game. In 2020, golf's governing bodies announced their intention to 'break the ever-increasing cycle of hitting distance.' The USGA and R&A later revealed plans to implement a golf ball rollback in 2023, which would reduce the longest hitters' distances by up to 15 yards. Initially set to be introduced in professional golf in 2028, the plan is now expected to be delayed until 2030. Ridley has consistently expressed concerns over the distances elite players are hitting the golf ball, stating that the issue goes beyond competitive impacts and affects the game's overall character. 'Unfortunately, many courses, including some iconic venues, do not have the option to make modifications,' Ridley said. 'Until recent years, golf has been a game of imagination, creativity, and variety. The game has become much more one-dimensional.' Ridley believes that a rollback can improve the professional game without affecting recreational golfers, citing data that suggests the impact on the recreational game will be minimal. 'The greats of the game are defined not merely by how far they hit the ball, but their extraordinary skill in all aspects of the game,' he added. The regulation of the golf ball is not an attempt to turn back time or stifle progress, but rather an effort to preserve the essence of what makes golf a great game. Meanwhile, there are 10 LIV Golf League players participating in this year's Masters, despite the circuit having been recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) ahead of the 2026 campaign. Ridley, part of the OWGR board, acknowledged that there are still 'issues' to resolve regarding LIV Golf's ranking points. The Masters tournament will feature wall-to-wall coverage on Sky Sports, starting at 2 pm on Thursday, with various streams and updates available throughout the event.
