Cyclist Handed 25-Day Ban for On-Road Altercation

The international governing body for cycling has imposed a 25-day ban on New Zealand's Kiaan Watts following an incident during a race last month. Footage from the event showed Watts, 24, landing a punch on Dutch cyclist Marijn Maas during the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race in the Netherlands on March 7. The Union Cycliste Internationale confirmed Watts has accepted the penalty, which will keep him off the road until May 2. The organization stated, "Kiaan Watts will serve a 25-day suspension, with the one-day team-imposed suspension on March 8 counted towards the total." Watts took to social media to apologize for his actions, citing the heat of the moment, and his team, NSN Development Team, also issued a formal apology. The incident highlights the importance of maintaining a sporting and professional demeanor during competition, as emphasized by the team's statement: "The team expects its riders to always conduct themselves in a sporting and professional manner and extends apologies to Marijn Maas, the BEAT CC/p Saxo team, race organizers, and the UCI Commissaires."
