A new grass-court ATP 250 tournament is coming to Milan in 2028, with the iconic San Siro stadium being considered as a potential venue. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation has acquired the rights to the tournament, which was previously held in Brussels. The event will take place in June and is expected to be held in northern Italy due to climate reasons. San Siro, with its massive capacity of over 75,000, is a strong contender to host the tournament.
The federation's president, Angelo Binaghi, noted that the decision on the venue is yet to be made, but the San Siro's large capacity makes it an attractive option. This move is part of a broader effort to boost tennis in Italy, which already hosts the ATP Finals in Turin and the Rome Masters on clay. The country is also investing in its tennis infrastructure, with plans to install a retractable roof at the Foro Italico in Rome.
Binaghi has ambitious plans to make the Rome tournament a fifth Grand Slam, rivaling the likes of Indian Wells. Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner is also aiming to make history by becoming the first Italian man to win the singles title at the Foro Italico in 50 years.
